INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY

People seek therapy for a variety of reasons but typically it is because certain aspects of their functioning create stress and they desire change to alleviate their discomfort. The problems may include anxious or depressed mood caused by the quality of their thinking; i.e. negative, catastrophic thinking or recurrent, dysfunctional patterns of behavior that they have carried over from childhood which create problems in their adult relationships. Therapy is individualized according to the client’s needs and goals. Common approaches may be helping the individual focus on the quality of their thinking in order to replace their negative, self-defeating thoughts or perhaps identify and understand maladaptive patterns of behavior which impact their personal and/or work relationships.

COUPLES’ THERAPY

Couples often seek therapy because of a disruption in their ability to clearly communicate their feelings, thoughts and needs to each other. Each person in a couple bring certain “scripts” which they developed in their family which may have been functional as a child but no longer work in their adult relationships. Couples can work in therapy to identify each other’s “scripts” and the various triggers which create negative emotional responses.

SUPERVISION

I have had experience supervising early career Psychologists and Social Workers as well as graduate students in both psychology and social work. Supervision focuses on providing practical information as well as examining their countertransference in their work with their patients.

CONSULTATION

I can provide support and information in helping families navigate the often complex mental heath system. My administrative and clinical work in both inpatient and outpatient settings has familiarized me with mental health and substance abuse treatment resources as well as legal, housing and benefit resources for the chronic, persistently mentally ill population.
